Origin of Designs & Symbols
Finely decorated semi-circular disc made from beaten gold were an important emblem, probably worn by priests during the Bronze Age. Although their shape seems to relate to the crescent moon, they more probably represent the sun as gold was intrinically related to the solar diety. The National Museum in Ireland display many fine examples of these discs.
