The Namji (Dowayo) people are a tribe in North Cameroon who have a long and rich history. They are well-known for their wooden dolls and are accomplished woodcarvers. Namji Dolls, also known as Dowayo Dolls are dolls native to the Namji. The dolls are highly prized and collected around the world. No two dolls are exactly alike in shape, color and decoration. The dolls stand in a typical stiff and upright position. In the Namji tradition, the Dolls are fertility dolls given to brides during a wedding ceremony. The Namji believe that these fertility dolls are made with potent charms that enhance the bride’s fertility and ward off evil spirits. Namji Dolls are also given to young girls for role play and can also be used to make marriage proposals.
